Software giant Microsoft will release a web-based version of its Office suite of products for free, in a move to compete with similar offerings from Google and other open-source products.

Google Filters Image Problem

Mountain View has added a filter to its Google Images to allow users to sift through photos to determine the usage rights of the image.

New options are now available via Google's image search tool that include a selection of licensing methods, such as Creative Commons and GNU Free Documentation, for the reuse of photographs.

Microsoft IE Losing Ground?

StatCounter, a Web tracking service, published data over the weekend claiming that Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)'s Internet Explorer browser is losing ground.

Whether the data will hold remains to be seen. The trend has not yet been confirmed by other tracking services, leading some bloggers to question whether the data is a blip or whether Microsoft's rivals Mozilla, Apple's Safari, and Google's Chrome are truly making gains.

Mozilla's latest browser version, Firefox 3.5, made its official public debut this week, pleasing users with new, faster features, but in no particular way leaping ahead of its predecessor or its growing host of competitors.

Firefox 3.5, the embodiment of Mozilla's attempt to "upgrade the Web," was released Thursday for Windows, Windows Portable, Mac, and Linux. Some of its key improvements are a new JavaScript engine for faster Web applications such as Google Docs; the ability to show video built into Web pages without plug-ins; a private browsing mode; fancy downloadable fonts; and geolocation technology that can let Web sites know where you are.
